Noa and a few of her friends are taught by Dr. Tolson how the human body works. The kids learn that the body has 206 bones, over 600 muscles, how your body is like a super machine because of your skeletal system, and more fun things about your circulatory system, digestive system, and even your immune system. The author includes exercises, questions, activities, and experiments, etc. to help explain her material to her young readers.

Opinion:

This children’s book was a pure delight to read because Dr. Tolson took her time explaining in fun details how certain systems work within your body. Instead of making each mini lesson boring, she made it fun for readers to try different exercises to help further explain a specific system she was speaking about to the three female girl students who were in the book. She also included sections such as “Dr. T’s Questions” in which she presents an important question for her readers to answer about that particular system she was lecturing about. Another add-on was the “Activity Prompts” where she had readers doing little activities to learn about what she was talking about in that section. She even had an “Experiment” section so readers could conduct little experiments to further enhance their learning. One more additional thing she added was the “Fun Fact Box” which further explained the idea she was speaking about on that page. All of these add-ons will surely draw readers in to see how many things they can answer along the way. I feel these bonus add-ons were perfectly thought out to make young minds think outside the box to learn about the different systems we have in our bodies.

Another thing I loved about how Dr. Tolson approached teaching about the human body was that she did it in a fun manner that will have children eagerly wanting to follow along and participate in what she is speaking about in each section. Many times trying to teach young students the human body produces glazed over eyes and a strong disconnect in the children learning anything. Instead, Dr. Tolson took teaching to a whole different and very unique level, allowing children to want to eagerly learn as much as they can within these pages. I feel because of her fresh and fun approach to teaching, this would make a wonderful book to have in the classroom, school library, or even in your children’s home library.

The illustrations provided by Art Zone made every page eye-catching, which will allow each child to be drawn into what Dr. Tolson was trying to teach them on that page. Each picture was full-paged and vibrantly colored, allowing the readers to see her demonstrations clearly. This is the perfect book to use to teach children the body processes in an easy to remember format because she made it such a visual learning experience.

Dr. Shenell Tolson is a scientist, educator, and an author behind the fun Noa The Little Scientist series. She writes STEM powered books that inspire young readers to explore science, health, and the world around them. She has a doctorate in public health and has a unique way in making complex topics fun for children to learn from.

Overall, Noa The Little Scientist Investigates: The Human Body is a children’s book that can be enjoyed by readers of any age. Dr. Tolson shares her love and passion for science in an easy to understand format that will make children truly want to learn what she sets out to teach them. This is one science book that shouldn’t be passed up. I highly recommend it!
