Have you ever wondered how American Sign Language (ASL) is different from English? If so, then this primer is for you! Easily walking individuals through the basics of English – grammar, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, metaphors, etc. – and then through the basics of ASL, the author perfectly exemplifies the differences and similarities these two languages share. This book briefly explains how both languages impact the mind of an individual, and it also touches briefly on cognitive linguistics.
This was a marvelous read! As someone who has both an Associate of Arts degree in American Sign Language (ASL) and an Associate of Arts degree in English, I have spent hours of time learning both languages and the nuances of said languages, and still I learned something new from this lovely book. While most of the materials covered are very basic and appropriate for the age level suggested, anyone of any age can learn something fascinating from this book.
This writing piece perfectly exemplified how a person can take several different and difficult concepts and put them all together to form a cohesive, amazing read that was simple to understand and easy to retain, yet still great and enjoyable to read.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to whatever else the author publishes in the future. I will keep this book in my personal library for years to come. The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that I wished it were more expansive – what was touched upon in the book was a joy to read, and upon finishing the material, I found myself wishing that the book was longer instead of just a simple primer. I hope that a more extensive book will someday be made by this author, and if it ever is, I look forward to reading it.
