LitPick Review
This story features Marek and Ilona, a married couple who, after five years of marriage, are beginning to notice a disconnect. Ilona has traded her smoking addiction for television, losing herself in endless binge‑watching. With aspirations of becoming a screenwriter, she claims her “research” is simply watching shows. However, this never translates into words on a page, and TV continues to consume her time. Marek has had enough. He points out her obsession, leading to frequent arguments. Ultimately, the question becomes: who will she choose, Marek or the TV?
Opinion:
The short story carries a darkly comic tone, with humor that is dry and sarcastic. I enjoy this type of humor, and many of the misunderstandings in the story arise from it. Both characters display jealousy, yet they clearly still care for one another. The reader is likely to laugh at the characters’ attempts at humor, even as their jokes often offend their partner and spark tension.
Addiction is a major theme throughout the story. Ilona trades smoking for binge‑watching television. She rationalizes it as research for her screenplay, but in reality, she is mindlessly watching as TV becomes the background noise of her life. Her husband is even able to move out without her noticing. The story reflects the idea that overcoming an addiction often requires a replacement behavior, television replaces cigarettes. Without smoking, Ilona loses part of her sociability and sense of self, and the story highlights how all encompassing addiction can be. The switch from smoking to TV feels believable, especially since lifestyle changes like quitting smoking often come with other disruptions, such as weight loss or shifts in routine.
The third‑person point of view provides insight into both characters and their emotions. Feelings play a major role in the story’s development. By giving both Ilona and Marek a voice, the reader can understand their perspectives on each other and their strained relationship. Their inner thoughts also add an extra layer of humor to the narrative.
This story is well‑suited for someone looking for a short read with a comedic backdrop. I would especially recommend it for adult readers, as the humor is quite dry. However, it might not be the best conversation starter if your partner happens to have a TV addiction!
