LitPick Review
Neil Kyd used to work for the CIA before trading in his badge for a quiet farm life in Kansas. Now, he’s a full-time caregiver to his terminally ill daughter, Molly. When he’s offered a chance to get her into an experimental treatment program in exchange for completing a secret mission, he jumps at it. The assignment takes him to Moscow to retrieve a video memory card, but the plan unravels almost immediately. Will Kyd be able to survive the fallout and make it back to his daughter, and will she get the treatment?
Opinion:
This fast-paced book is packed with action. As a reader, it kept me guessing and wanting to know what would happen next. Each chapter is short but filled with high-stakes situations. From a mission to retrieve a memory card to being framed for a presidential assassination, there is never a dull moment, and you’re never quite sure who to trust.
The theme of parental sacrifice runs throughout the story. Kyd takes on a dangerous mission in Russia so his daughter can have a chance at an experimental treatment that might save her life. No matter how many times his own life is threatened, he’s willing to put himself on the line for her. As a parent, your role is to protect your child at all costs, and that’s exactly what he does. You can’t help but cheer him on and hope he makes it back to her.
The third-person narrative adds suspense. Readers stay close to Kyd’s emotions and perspective, while still experiencing the action from the outside. I liked how this made him feel personal and relatable, while also keeping the tension high.
I would recommend this book to fans of action, thrillers, or anyone who enjoys a high-stakes adventure.
