The book Jasmine Toguchi, Mochi Queen is about a girl named Jasmine Toguchi who wants to roll mochi with her older sister, Sophie. There's one problem, though; you have to be 10 to roll mochi and Jasmine is only 8. Mochi is a gooey Japanese rice dessert. Jasmine decides to pound the rice for mochi instead. But with that, there's another problem: pounding mochi is traditionally reserved for boys, and the mochi hammer is heavier than it looks.

Flight of a Starling is about Rita and Lo, two teenage sisters born into a family of circus performers. The two of them perform as trapeze artists and love traveling from place to place. Then Lo meets a "flattie" named Dean, a college boy who has only lived in one place his whole life. The two form a strong connection and sneak off night after night to be together, despite her father's orders that she is to only associate with her own kind.

Lion Island takes place during the Cuban War of Independence, a time when Cuba was fighting for its freedom from Spain. This book shows three different perspectives. First, Antonio Chuffat. He comes from a long line of different races, which all play an important role in his life since cultural diversity is a big problem during this time. He is grateful for his messenger job. Next is Wing. Wing is a Chinese indentured servant who sells fruit. Antonio and Wing meet and soon become friends. This leads to Wing introducing his sister Fan to Antonio.

When Alex and his friends Gabby, Ahmed, and Destiny decide to explore an old abandoned movie set that is said to be cursed and caught on fire in the ‘80s, Destiny decides to go off on her own. She falls through the floor and finds a tunnel that leads to an old shed. Alex, Gabby, and Ahmed finally find her in the shed with a bunch of old movie reels. Once they get home Alex realizes he lost his wallet with his ID card, so he has to call his mom. Alex, Destiny, Gabby, and Ahmed think that they are cursed because they trespassed on the movie set.

Ok’s has a braiding business at school, and he goes through the struggle of hating his soon-to-be new dad. Ok runs away to his father’s dream house and tries to live there for a couple of days, and his friends, Mickey and Asa go looking for him.

Cedar was found in the forest by the foot of a large cedar tree when she is just a baby, found by Sara and Keven Montgomery, who take her home and house her as their own. She later names the large cedar tree, the one she was found under, Stella. On her first day of school, she meets Phillip, who becomes her only friend. Cedar later convinces Phillip to join the Order of the Trees, a club that only Cedar had been in before the two friends met.

In the book, the group of kids meet a famous explorer named Catherine who promised to help them find Sebastian. The group flies over to Korea to find Sebastian and the only thing left for the group now is to find Evie’s grandfather who is somewhere he could be in danger. They run into small problems they have to solve like taking a shark out of a backyard pool and finding a way to take the shark to the aquarium.
